What causes slab leaks?

The most common cause of slab leaks is that of age. Most slabs are lined with a thin layer of soft copper that is extremely prone to degrading or succumbing to pressure over time. The pressure from the house could cause the pipes that are running through the slab to be crushed and rupture over time.

Another cause of a slab leak is corrosion, which is when the copper lining is exposed to moisture and it degrades over time. The pipes that are running through the slab are particularly susceptible to this because they are located underground where there can be a lot of groundwater.

A third cause of slab leaks is that of abrasion. When water runs through the pipes, they will vibrate and rub against the slab in which they have been installed. This can cause the pipes to degrade over time and develop holes.

What are the signs you have a slab leak?

Be mindful of these four distinct signs you have a slab leak.

  • Unexpectedly high water bill. A household’s water bill will change throughout the year. However, if you’ve noticed that your water bill has skyrocketed for no reason, you may be experiencing a leak. This is often the result of water being lost, but not being used, through a ruptured pipe in the slab that has not yet been detected.
  • Random wet spots. If a homeowner is walking through his or her basement and there is a random wet spot on the carpeting, but no liquid has been spilled, then that is a strong sign that there might be a slab leak. The water has pushed itself up through the carpeting and caused the wet spot. Hot spots can also occur, which is when hot water reaches the basement.
  • Constantly running water. If a person is home and constantly hearing water running with no apparent cause, then that could be the result of water running out through a hole in the pipes.
  • Heaving is when the ground becomes so saturated with water that it swells and causes the home to rise up. This can cause severe structural damage and is almost a sure sign of a slab leak.

Where are slab leaks often found?

Slab leaks are often found near the base of the slab or where the pipe enters the slab. This is where the pipes are the most vulnerable to succumbing to pressure or degrading over time.

Contact Greenlee Plumbing, Inc. in Atlanta, GA to have the slab leaks repaired before extensive damage can be done to your home.

TESTIMONIALS

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY ABOUT US

“Great Service and Experience. From the scheduling to quality of work everything was exceptional. The plumber that service my house (Billy) was on time, courteous, explained the problem, solution and cost before work began. He placed covering over my entire kitchen and thoroughly cleaned everything before he left. I would highly recommend Greenlee Plumbing and will definitely use them in the future.”

— Michael Morrison

“Excellent service! Had greenlee do a full repipe of the house to replace all polybutylene pipes with new PEX-B. Not only did greenlee give a competitive price, but the quality of their work (including repairing all drywall cuts and color matching existing paint colors) was excellent. Outstanding customer service and workmanship!”

— Andy Van Riper

“I was very impressed with the service provided by Greenlee Plumbing. They communicated with me throughout the process. They re-piped the house with someone living there in one day. The next day they completed the rebuild by repairing the drywall and painting. This was all included in one quoted price. Typically after a plumbing repair I would need someone else to come in and repair the drywall.”

— Rob Peluso
